The Conservation Project Manager will help lead Seatuck’s work with the Long Island Sound River Restoration Network, focusing on identifying and advancing riverine connectivity & restoration projects across the North Shore of Long Island and potentially within other areas of the Long Island Sound watershed. Primary responsibilities will include the following:

  • Meet with governmental officials and community leaders to identify and advocate for dam removal, culvert right-sizing and river restoration projects
  • Initiate and manage multiple river-focused projects 
  • Prepare and issue RFPs; hire and manage engineering/GIS consultants
  • Collaborate on projects with private/governmental partners
  • Work with development staff to identify funding opportunities and prepare/submit grant proposals
  • Manage grants, including submitting required reports and reimbursement requests
  • Represent Seatuck at meetings of the River Restoration Network and Long Island Diadromous Fish Workgroup
  • Assist with annual diadromous fish community science survey
  • Work with staff to promote river restoration efforts in the press, social media and other outlets.

Preferred Qualifications

  • B.A./B.S. degree and four years of experience in conservation advocacy, natural resource management or related field
  • Experience with riverine projects, including dam removal, fish passage, culvert upgrades, riparian restoration, etc.
  • Experience managing government grants and working with engineering consultants
  • Experience collaborating diverse stakeholders, working independently and meeting project timelines
  • A team player with strong interpersonal and leadership skills, as well as the ability to work well with a diverse range of people.
  • Excellent administrative, organizational and computer skills
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and the ability to effectively communicate with partners and agency representatives in decision-making, consensus-building, and collaboration
  • Familiarity with GIS-based mapping solutions and social media
  • The ability and willingness to travel within the Long Island Sound watershed

Compensation

Seatuck offers marketable compensation that reflects the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. The salary range for this position is $58,000 – $68,000, annually, depending on experience and qualifications. POSITION OVERVIEW:

This spring, Seatuck will be taking over a portion of the former Bluepoint Oyster Company facility at the West Sayville Boat Basin. Over the coming months, we’ll be converting the iconic location into a working restoration-focused hatchery & wet lab. Our goal is to establish a dynamic hub for collaborative, innovative and impactful conservation leadership across the South Shore Estuary and throughout the region.

The hatchery manager will play a key role in the hatchery from the ground up, contributing to the strategic direction, facility design, equipment selection, workflow development and operational protocols. This hands-on management role requires deep technical expertise in shellfish hatchery operations, strong organizational and communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with researchers, restoration practitioners and regulatory partners. The manager will supervise a hatchery technician, oversee interns and volunteers, and work closely with and report to Seatuck’s conservation director as a member of the conservation team. The primary work location will be in West Sayville, NY, with occasional travel to grow-out sites and restoration project locations across Long Island.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contribute to the design, build-out and optimization of hatchery and wet lab infrastructure
  • Plan, manage and execute all aspects of shellfish hatchery production, including broodstock conditioning, spawning, larval rearing, setting, nursery culture and field grow-out
  • Oversee algal culture production and hatchery support systems (e.g., seawater systems, filtration, temperature control)
  • Maintain high standards for biosecurity, animal health, water quality and operational safety
  • Monitor production performance and troubleshoot challenges to meet project goals
  • Lead day-to-day operations of hatchery and laboratory spaces
  • Oversee equipment  procurement, maintenance and repairs
  • Contribute to the development of standard operating procedures and best management practices for the facility
  • Supervise and train a hatchery technician, as well as  interns and volunteers
  • Coordinate daily hatchery activities and scheduling among internal project teams, researchers and external partners
  • Foster a collaborative, safe and productive working environment

COMPENSATION:

Seatuck offers marketable compensation that reflects the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate. The position is a hands-on technical role focused on daily hatchery operations, shellfish culture, algae production, data collection and field support. The technician will work closely with and report to the hatchery manager and collaborate with other staff, interns, volunteers, researchers and restoration partners. The position is ideal for someone interested in applied marine science, shellfish aquaculture and ecological restoration. The primary work location will be West Sayville, NY, with occasional travel to grow-out sites and restoration project locations across Long Island.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform routine cleaning and sanitation of hatchery and laboratory spaces 
  • Assist with operation and maintenance of hatchery support systems (e.g., seawater systems, filtration, temperature control)
  • Monitor water quality parameters
  • Assist with algal media preparation, inoculations and culture maintenance
  • Support production across multiple culture scales (e.g., stock cultures, carboys, kalwalls, photobioreactors etc..)
  • Conduct algal counts and maintain water quality and culture health
  • Assist with broodstock maintenance, conditioning and spawning activities
  • Support larval culture operations including water changes, larval counts, feeding, health assessments and restocking
  • Assist with setting and post-set operations, including system preparation, larval stocking, daily maintenance, seed grading, cleaning and monitoring growth and survival
  • Accurately calculate and implement feeding regimes for multiple life stages
  • Maintain accurate, organized daily records of hatchery activities, production metrics and experimental protocols
  • Assist with data entry, basic analysis and reporting as needed
  • Assist with deployment and maintenance of in situ nursery systems
  • Support restoration projects including shellfish planting, monitoring and grow-out activities
  • Participate in field sampling and equipment transport as needed

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The conservation technician will be a member of and support Seatuck’s conservation team and work under the supervision of conservation staff. This role supports projects focused on protecting, preserving and restoring habitat for priority species including horseshoe crabs, diamondback terrapins, diadromous fish, river otters and seabirds.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with wildlife monitoring, habitat assessments and environmental sampling
  • Collect accurate field data following established protocols
  • Assist with data entry, basic data review and reporting as needed
  • Support equipment deployment, maintenance and retrieval
  • Work collaboratively with conservation staff, interns and volunteers
  • Support community science and conservation programs as needed
  • Follow all established safety, field and operational procedures
  • Participate in training opportunities and contribute to the improvement of fieldwork practices

SCHOOL YEAR INTERNSHIPS

Seatuck offers volunteer conservation and education opportunities for college and high school students throughout the school year. ISLE PROJECT FELLOWSHIP –

In 2025, Seatuck launched the ISLE Project (which stands for Introducing Students to Long Island’s Estuaries), an education initiative that engages students in in-school lessons, field trips and hands-on experiences related to estuaries, including helping to raise juvenile oysters. As part of the project, we offer fellowship positions to provide support for all aspects of the project. The fellows gain valuable experience working with Seatuck and the Town of Islip Shellfish Cultivation Facility on oyster cultivation and education efforts around the Great South Bay. 

Position Description:

ISLE Project Fellows will assist in various aspects of the project, from hatchery operations to educational programming. Your responsibilities may include:

  • Hatchery Operations – Assisting hatchery staff with algae cultivation & feedings; oyster broodstock conditioning & spawning; and care of juvenile oysters through various stages
  • Equipment Maintenance – Keeping hatchery systems clean and operational
  • Oyster Fieldwork – Tending to and monitoring oysters in grow-out site
  • Public Outreach & Education – Leading hatchery tours, engaging the public in oyster conservation and assisting with educational programming

Fellowship Details:

  • Duration: Fall and Spring Semesters
  • Time Commitment: 10-15 hours per week
  • Location: Seatuck Environmental Association (Islip), Town of Islip Shellfish Hatchery (East Islip), and Shorefront Park (Patchogue)
  • Compensation: $16.50 per hour

COASTAL CONSERVATION TECHNICIAN INTERSHIP (Spring & Summer 2026)

Location: South Shore Estuary Reserve

Join our conservation team as a coastal conservation technician intern this spring/summer and contribute to important conservation efforts in the South Shore Estuary Reserve and beyond! This internship offers a unique opportunity to assist a conservation scientist and conservation project coordinator with cutting-edge projects focused on monitoring tern species and diamondback terrapin populations on marsh islands and coastal habitats using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Conservation technicians will also have the opportunity to assist in oyster shell recycling and restoration projects alongside Seatuck staff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • UAV Flight Monitoring: Observe and monitor bird and terrapin populations during UAV flights above marsh islands to ensure minimal disturbance to wildlife.

  • Wildlife Observation: Identify and record bird species, paying particular attention to signs of distress such as bird flushing, which may indicate disturbance.

  • Data Digitization: Assist with processing and digitizing field data, ensuring accurate entry into databases for further analysis.

  • Wildlife Identification: Support the identification of species and behaviors from 4K video footage captured during UAV flights.

  • Field Assistance: Participate in fieldwork and help with the setup and operation of UAVs; assist in the collection and replacement of oyster shell bags at various study sites, as well as help count oyster spat for recruitment analysis.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interest in wildlife conservation, particularly birds, reptiles, and shellfish 

  • Experience or coursework in ecology, biology, environmental science, or related fields

  • Ability to identify local bird species and basic wildlife behavior

  • Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods of time (particularly on a boat) and in varying weather conditions

  • Familiarity with data entry and experience with video analysis is a plus.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

This PAID internship with a stipend of $4500 requires a three to four-day-a-week commitment. It will provide hands-on experience in field data collection, UAV technology, and wildlife monitoring, and will contribute to important conservation initiatives on Long Island.
