Diamondback Terrapin Volunteer Training

Are you passionate about local wildlife and looking for a hands-on way to protect coastal ecosystems? Join Seatuck Environmental Association for an upcoming in-person training session and play an active role in safeguarding Long Island’s Diamondback Terrapins.

During this program, you’ll explore the fascinating world of North America’s only brackish-water turtle. We’ll cover their biology, behaviors, and estuarine distribution, along with their deep cultural and ecological significance. We’ll also examine the modern conservation challenges that threaten their survival today—from habitat loss to road mortality.

Most importantly, you'll learn how to take real action. We’ll train you on simple field and digital protocols to collect and submit crucial data for our active community science efforts, including:

    DEC Headcount Surveys: Conduct simple visual shore-based monitoring along local waterways.

    Seatuck’s Terrapin Watch: Report opportunistically using your smartphone via the Survey123 app when you spot terrapins or nesting activity.

    Zooniverse Drone Surveys: Review aerial drone footage from home to help locate terrapins in salt marshes.
