The Conservation Lecture
Bat presentations are at the heart of Seatuck’s unique Bats & Brews Benefit – in fact, the fundraiser grew out of a bat presentation that was part of a monthly lecture series in 2009. For 15 years, event-goers have enjoyed wonderfully educational and entertaining presentations on bats, spiders, and other Halloween-themed wildlife.
Our 2024 lecturer, Mr. Joe Arguelles, was a comparative biology Ph.D. student in the American Museum of Natural History’s Richard Gilder Graduate School (where many of our past bat presenters were also studying!).
His research focuses on understanding the molecular drivers of the incredible mechanical properties of spider silks. He also studies the evolution of “prey capture systems” (silk, venom, and vision) in active hunting spiders, and how these genes have changed in response to the loss of web-spinning behavior.
The Brews
Bats & Brews features craft beer from Long Island breweries, as well as from breweries based in Brooklyn, Queens, and the Hudson Valley. Seatuck is proud to support and promote these local companies and encourage their use of locally sourced ingredients and sustainable practices. Participating breweries include the following:
