New project seeks to foster connections with the environment by providing a venue for those who are interested in reading and/or writing about the natural world.
|
The Center for Nature Writing at Seatuck, as the project will ambitiously be known, involves a reading group and a writing group, as well as eventual appearances by published authors and craft workshops. The reading group, which initially plans to meet every other month, will read and discuss various books and other works by published authors. The list of possible readings could range anywhere from classics by the likes of Henry David Thoreau, Aldo Leopold, Edwin Way Teale or Rachel Carson to newer works by David Quammen, E.O. Wilson, Jack Turner or Barbara Kingsolver. For it's organizational meeting in May, the group read Welcome to Shirley by Kelly McMasters, a wonderful book about growing up on the south shore of Long Island and the legacies of poorly planned development and the Brookhaven National Laboratory.
The writing group will be a regular group workshop to develop and refine original nature writing. Each meeting will focus on a different craft topic and also include a portion for sharing participants works with an opportunity for writer-directed feedback. In coming months, the group will also hold special workshops, including a feedback and publishing session with Orion Magazine's Editor-in-Chief H. Emerson Blake. Visits by published authors are also planned for the future, including both local authors and nationally renowned writers.
The reading group will initially meet on the first Thursday of every other month, starting on Thursday, July 1. The writing group will meet on the second Monday of every other month, starting on July 12th. There are no fees for participation in the ongoing groups, but we will charge for the workshops and author visits.
