This citizen science survey will support monitoring led by Cornell Cooperative Extension, the NY Department of Environmental Conservation and Dowling College aimed at understanding the distribution and abundance of our local horseshoe crab spawning populations.  The data we collect will also be used to help inform management decisions.  These "living fossils" are more than just a curious visitor to our beaches.  Their eggs provide critical food resources to wildlife, including many migratory bird species.  Additionally, horseshoe crabs are commercially valuable for their blood (used in biomedical tests) and as bait for the fishing industry, thus sustainable management practices are important.
